Spin for a random letter

This random letter generator is an alphabet wheel with all 26 letters, each with an equal 1 in 26 chance on every spin. Use it for word games, Scattergories, Pictionary rounds, spelling practice or any game that starts with "think of something beginning with..."

Tap Vowels for a wheel of A, E, I, O and U, Consonants for the other 21 letters, or Common for twelve of the most frequently used letters in English. These help with word games where a rare letter such as Q or Z would stall the round.

Turn on "Retire winners" to use every letter once. Each letter leaves the wheel after it is picked, so a game never repeats a letter.

How to use it

  1. Choose the letters

Leave the full alphabet on, or tap Vowels, Consonants or Common.

  2. Hold, then release

Hold the brass button and let go to launch the wheel.

  3. Play with the letter

The winning letter fills the screen. Name a word, an animal, a place, whatever your game asks.

Questions

How many letters are on the wheel?

The full alphabet has 26. Vowels has 5, Consonants has 21 and Common has 12.

Does every letter have the same chance?

Yes. The segments are equal in size, so on the full wheel each letter has a 1 in 26 chance. Common letters are not weighted in the full-alphabet wheel.

Can I leave out hard letters like Q, X and Z?

Tap Common, or delete those entries with the "x" button.

Is it good for Scattergories?

Yes. Spin for the round letter, then fill in your categories. Turn on "Retire winners" so letters do not repeat.

Can I use it for spelling practice?

Yes. Spin for a letter and ask children to name words that start with it.
